So, remember last week’s One Room Challenge post where I said I really didn’t get much done…but had big plans to accomplish more this week?? Yeah, about that…I’ve not really made that much progress.
But, I will say that I have a good excuse. Why do I suddenly feel like I’m in the principal’s office right now? It kinda, sorta slipped my mind that I agreed to participate in a neighborhood rummage sale this coming weekend. And, as of this past Sunday I really hadn’t even started to get ready for it. Procrastination is my jam. So, needless to say, this rummage sale has sucked up most of my time this week.
So in-between sorting, pricing and setting up the loads of stuff we have been collecting in our basement over 10 years time (ugg, why am I doing this rummage sale again?), I did manage to squeeze in a few ORC related things.
If you recall from last week, the pine stair tread that I hoped to use for the shelving were not really staining the right color becuase of their yellow undertone. So I grabbed the oak stair treads from Lowe’s thinking all my problems were solved. Not so much. These are red oak, and with just a few samples of stain slapped on, I realized that I was going to have a harder time matching the look of the desk and bookcase than I thought.
I’ve been reading up a bit on how to solve this problem. From what I understand I only have a few options. Try a pickling stain, and if that doesn’t work, bleach the wood. *Sigh* I so don’t love DIY for this very reason. It ends up taking more time and money than envisioned almost every time!
Beyond that nightmare, I did managed to get the bookcase I ordered from Target assembled.
After getting it all set up and in place, I realized that I’ll probably need something to fill the area above it. Firstly to cover up that baseball (more on that here if you’re just joining me), and second just because it would look too empty. Since the focus of this room is all about adding functional storage, I decide to add some wall hooks to hold all of Jackson’s baseball hats.
I’m slightly obsessed with these CB2 coat hooks, so I wanted something similar for his space. Truth be told, I actually own 2 sets these babies already, but I’m selfishly holding on to them to use in my back hallway area will be getting a small makeover after the ORC is over. Plus, the wood tone is not right for this room anyway, so I decided to make my own. Yes, I know. I was just complaining about how much I hate DIY. It’s a love/hate relationship.
But this one will be easy, or at least it seems that way now! Famous last words, right?!
I grabbed theses inexpensive wood plaques at Hobby Lobby. I’ll give them a coat of black spray paint, drive a screw all the way through the back of the smaller one, use wood glue to secure the two wood peices together, and boom! Stylish hooks for hats or other things.
I decided on these reading sconces from World Market and picked them up using their pick up in store option (super fast)! They don’t protrude much from the wall which I like, and will reduce the risk of late night bumps to the head.
On one of my Target runs I remember that I still needed to grab curtain rods. I found these Umbra Loft rods that are going to work perfectly. Now I just have to decide if I want to go with a the dark charcoal curtains for a more contrasting looks, or with the heather grey ones that will keep things a bit lighter in the space. I really need to seem them up to decide, so I’ll have to wait until I get a hot second to put the rods up.
On that same Target run (what would I do without you, Target?) I came across these wood milk crate storage boxes that just fit under Jackson’s bed. I had planned on doing some DIY crates on wheels. But honestly I like the tone of the wood on these, and it will same me from another DIY – especially since I just added one to my list with the hat hooks!
So, after writing it all out, I guess I actually got a little more done than I thought I did! I’ve had so much on my mind and my to-do list this week that it felt like I hadn’t done much of anything!
With that, lets take a look at where the to do list stands currently:
Paint WallsDone in advance! Yay!New CarpetingDone! Yay again! It’s really just a happy accident that it was scheduled to be done during the ORCNew Bed and BeddingNew bed delivered and assembled, picked up bedding at IKEA
New Deskand Chairand BookcaseNew desk assembled, bookcase arrived, need desk chair (forgot to source!)
- Add Storage through Shelving (DIY)* – getting there!!
Under Bed Storage Crates with Wheels (DIY)*– saved myself some DIY, yay!
- Install a new Fan with light and remote – still working on this one….
- Add Lamp Lighting
and Sconce Lighting– picked up the sconces!
Getand hang new Curtain Rods and Curtains –I have everything, just need them hang them up!Add Chair and Rug to create the ‘Chill Zone’ area – considering nixing the rug, it’s not essential
- Add Artwork, Hanging Poster Frame (DIY)*, Décor and Accessories throughout to personalize – this will be the big project for next week! The fun stuff!
According to this list, I seem to be making progress, at least on paper. Unfortunately so much of the list is in a half done state, and I need to get it ALL the way done. Such a challenge for an Aries like me…any Aries out there that can relate!?
So with that, I’d better stop all the talking about getting work done, and actually get to work. That list isn’t going to finish itself!
