I’ll be the first to admit that I tend to work from my couch more than from a desk. It’s a bad habit that I really need to change. I’m fortunate to have a room in my house solely dedicated as an office space, and I a few years back I even DIYed a shared desk space for myself and my husband to use together (awww). But unfortunately, the desk – and the room itself- ended up being used more as a storage unit for all things without a home, rather than an actual work space. I have some future plans to rework the space, but not until some other projects come off my plate.

Even with my current poor work space habits, I do think that having a desk space is an essential piece for every home No matter how hard you try, life is just cluttered with paperwork – bills, notes from school, coupons, post-it notes by the millions containing a random thought you want to explore later – and having a space to call your own to dump it all in (hey, no one said it needs to be an organized desk – that’s a whole other post)!

Possibly the best solution to adding a work space of your own is by adding a writing desk to your home. These small desks are often more affordable and easier to incorporate into your home compared to their bigger clunker desk cousins. While they don’t usually offer much storage space – maybe just a few shallow drawers at most – there are plenty of options that allow you to find stylish options that will fit into the decor of your space.

I know having an actual room for an office is not a possibility for everyone, and that’s okay. There a lot of spaces within a house or apartment that will work to incorporate a small writing desk. Look for empty spaces like under a window, or a wall in an under-utilized room. You can even use a desk for dual purposes if you are really tight on space – try placing a writing desk behind the sofa to double as a console or next to your bed to be use as a night table. You just may have to keep it a bit more organized to use it this way (but again, another post).
